Hint for who wants to visit this abbey (sent to us by Zygmund Krzywania): HERKENRODE ABBEY RESTORED TO ITS FORMER GLORY. Everyone knows the imposing building at Herkenrode, if only from a fleeting glimpse on the E313 motorway. These buildings bear witness to a splendid past, which commenced in 1182 when Duke Geeraard established an abbey in the centre of the county of Loon (1171-1194). In 1217 Herkenrode was officially included in the Order of Cîteaux. It became and remained the main female Cistercian abbey in the Netherlands. The abbey continued to grow and prosper until the French revolution, when the entire site was dismantled, sold and distributed. In recent years many walkers and cyclists have been surprised at the renewed industriousness and have been wondering what exactly is happening at Herkenrode. In 1998 the Flemish Region bought a major share of the estate. Land was given in management to the Nature Department and buildings to the Flanders Patrimony. A vision for the future was developed together with the city of Hasselt and a number of other partners. This will be translated into a ctual actions and realisations in the coming years.
