The plans of this modern church from 1956-1962
(architect Josef Lantsoght) ars inspired by the 'kokkel'( a kind of
mussel). Koksijde thanks its name to this mussel. At the origin a high
tower was planned, but because of the near airport this could not be
realised.
The inside of the church is very bright because of the many
glass frames. Gabriël Loire from Chartres has designed these
glass frames. The vew of the altar is assured from
evrywhere because of the constructionform. Altar and
crusifix are from the hand of
M.Witdouck.
When you enter the church you see immidiately that the blacks surfaces in the
porche are in fact coloured glass, what creates a colorfull
spectacle.
There is a beautiful sidechapelwith a modern Mary statue.
You would think that the confessional is part of the wall. It is
situated near the organ.
Since 1968 there is a relic in the leg of the Holy Idesbald, which was 1155 the
third abbot of the Abbey of the Dunes and a friend of the Holy
Bernard of Clairvaux (one of the most influent abbots of the churchs history). On 18
july 1999 the relic was transferred from the crypt into the
mausoleum in the church.
