This statue in honour of Jan Van Eyck dated 1878 is made by H. Pickery. He designed this statue 3,75 m high en it weighs about 1.780 kg. The statue was ultimately placed on the Jan Van Eyckplein after many discussions and transpositions. The inauguration was presided by king Leopold II.

It replaced an earlier statue dated 1820 which the people of Bruges deemed too small.
