UCO in GHENT

Renov. Hilde Heyvaerts (bur. Jo Crepain)

This modern building is based on an industrial building of the beginning of the 20th century. By adding a layer of new stone upon the thick, old walls, the windows now are 1 meter deep inside the walls. For the second floor, thin prefabricated concrete pillars were used, creating a very large room, clothed by steel plate. To get light into this large space, six cupolas were added to the arched roof.

This renovation happened in 1991 according to the plans by Hilde Heyvaerts, one of the architects of office Jo Crepain. There was a lot of discussion in Ghent, whether this building, with its pointy cupolas creating an impression of crème-fraiche, was beautiful or ugly. Anyway, this building got the price of 'company building' in 1993.
