After Frits Schetsken : 'Turrets which rise above the houses. On top, they
have a corbling out place
with typically 8 windows under a pointed roof. There are interesting explanations... One
of those is that the children had to go sit upstairs to watch whether their father's boat
was approaching via the river Scheldt... Another one thinks their name comes from the
Spanish word ‘pagadores’ (pay masters) who would have lived in those houses... The truth
is less romantic, it are just house towers, on the lower level there are the stairs and on
top a place to have a nice look over the city. This also explains why there a not only
windows towards the river side.... .' |
